Madwaleni Lodge - Basic Assessment and Water Use Licence

Phelamanga has been appointed to assist with the Public Participation activities linked to the Basic Assessment (BA) and Water Use Licence (WUL) applications for the proposed development of the Madwaleni Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal, an initiative by theAHC Northern Territories (Pty) Ltd. To be located within the proposed Babanango Game Reserve, in the Babanango Valley in the Ulundi Local Municipality. 

The project footprint is located within the northern reaches of Zululand which is located within the north eastern corner of the KwaZulu Natal Province. The project footprint falls within the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany Region of plant endemism. This region was added to the hotspot list in recognition of its astounding species richness, but also because of the threats to this rapidly changing land. Rural villages are scattered throughout the region and dominant land-use activities include subsistence farming and communal grazing. The project footprint is located approximately 18 km to the north of the town of Babanango within the Ulundi Local Municipality, KwaZulu Natal and is located adjacent to the White Mfolozi River within the proposed Babanango Game Reserve, KwaZulu Natal. The site is accessed from the R34 National Road in the North, via a gravel road through the farm Jordaan 3-656 and 5-656 on which the current Zulu Rock Lodge is located, Bloemhof 34 and Lulu No:722.

This sharing of information forms the basis of the public participation process and offers you the opportunity to become actively involved in the project from the outset. Public participation allows for local knowledge to be integrated into the BA as generated.

Babanango Tented Camp - Basic Assessment and Water Use Licence

Phelamanga has been appointed to assist with the Public Participation activities linked to the Basic Assessment (BA) and Water Use Licence (WUL) applications for the proposed Babanango Travelers Camp, Adjacent to the White Mfolozi River, Ulundi Local Municipality, Zululand District, KwaZulu-Natal in the Babanango Valley in Norther Kwa-Zulu Natal on behalf of Emcakweni Community Trust (the Applicant) in the Babanango Valley in the Ulundi Local Municipality. 

The site is located on the farm Doornhoek 391 to the North of the White Mfolozi River. The site is accessed from the R34 National Road in the North, via a gravel road through the farm Jordaan 3-656 and 5-656 on which the current Zulu Rock Lodge is located, Bloemhof 34 and Lulu No:722. The farm Lulu No:722 is included within the Babanango Game Reserve boundary of March 2019 and is located North of the White Mfolozi River which forms the Northern boundary of the proposed tented camp site.

Vopak Spill Incident 26 January 2020

Vopak Ethyl Acrylate Leak Incident

On 26 January 2020 there was a leak of Ethyl Acrylate, as a response to the incident Vopak called a public meeting to inform the community of what had occurred and the follow up actions to address the incident.

The meeting was held on 30 January 2020 at the Harlequins Sports Club on the Bluff. The meeting was attended by Vopak Senior Management, eThekwini Health Officials and Fire Department, community members and community organisation representatives.

Vopak presented to the community a timeline of the incident and a medical Doctor presented on the health symptoms that occur from the exposure to the odour. Presentation available at the following link: Final_Draft_200130.pdf

The outcome of the meeting was an agreement that there would be a focus group to meet with Vopak to. The goal of the focus group is to make sure Vopak can reach out to the communities in an effect way to give updates on the investigation, actions after the incident and for future communication if necessary. The focus group would consist of community representatives as agreed, and Vopak senior management. The focus group representatives would provide feedback to community.

Vopak provided an email point of contact for any community member to contact Vopak regarding any health issues they may have related to the incident

Babanango Causeway - Environmental Authorisation

Phelamanga was appointed to assist with the Public Participation acitivities linked to the BA and WUL applications for the White Umfolozi River Causeway Crossing in the Babanango Valley in Norther Kwa-Zulu Natal on behalf of Emcakweni Community Trust (the Applicant) in the Babanango Valley in the Ulundi Local Municipality.
