Three pre-conference workshops: Tuesday 7 July at Durban University of Technology:
1. Community Education (Full day R700)
This workshop focuses on the research conducted by CIPSET and Nelson Mandela Institute (NMI) on building Adult and Community Education. CIPSETs work is a Community Participatory Action Research project focused on building non-formal community education programmes from below. The CPAR Project explores the establishment of programmes related to the everyday life experiences and contexts of youth and adults including citizenship, environmental justice, etc. NMIs research sheds light on the growth of socially useful forms of work that is emerging in South Africa. Named, “Profiles of Possibility”, this project points to the emergence of an alternative landscape of a PSET system. PPPs are available for this workshop as well as booklets and other publications.
Presenters: Thalia Eccles & Anele Dloto (CIPSET) and Britt Baatjes (Centre for Education Rights and Transformation previously at NMI).
2. Engaging TVET COlleges (Full day R700)
This workshop has two components.
The first raises critical questions about the issues that TVET students face. It shows the wide range of support required by TVET students and how scholars at CIPSET are attempting to deal with these issues through research and praxis.
The second component of the workshop focuses on the curriculum content at TVET Colleges. The researchers involved in this project explore models of curriculum innovation involving collaboration between universities and colleges. Included in this exploration are critical questions about the relationship between curriculum innovation and work. PPPs will be available for this session. The papers to be presented are partly linked to these presentations.
Presenters: Olwam Mnqwazi & Tolika Sibiya (CIPSET)
3. Accessing and using Open Education Resources for the Post Schooling sector (Afternoon R400)
The Conference will open with a Colloquium on "Implementing Policy through Collaboration" with speakers from Durban University of Technology, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and UNISA.
